Heraldry Tutorials by Zoom

Ann Ballard's excellent series of Heraldic Tutorials commence this September.

All the Tutorials have a practical element and present an opportunity to learn and extend knowledge, expertise and heraldic vocabulary.

The cost of each Tutorial is £10. 

Heraldry 1: Introduction to Heraldry- Tuesday 7th September 10am

This first workshop in the series introduces the history, language and basic rules of heraldry. Suitable for those new to heraldry or those wanting to refresh knowledge. Presented by Chris Broom and Ann Ballard

Heraldry 2:  Blazoning- Monday - 13th September 2pm

This tutorial will continue from ‘Heraldry 1’, extending vocabulary and giving theory and practice for blazoning simple to complex shields. Introduction to the use of printed sources to identify the individuals or families represented by the heraldic arms. It is suggested that participants have a basic knowledge of heraldry or have attended ‘Heraldry 1’ workshop.

Heraldry 3: Marshalling, Cadency, and Hatchments - Monday 20th September 2pm

The third workshop in the series, will focus on ‘Marshalling’ and ‘Cadency’ and the use of Hatchments. It is suggested that participants have attended the ‘Heraldry 2’ workshop.

(NEW) Heraldic Research: Blazoning and Sources (1) - Wednesday 27th October 2021 10am

This new tutorial, building on previous presentations, focuses on the importance of correct blazoning and identifying individuals and family connections from heraldic achievements and then researching through printed sources. It is suggested that participants have an introductory knowledge of heraldry or have attended previous tutorials.

NEW:  Diamond Event – Local History the Clues from Heraldic Pub Signs- Thursday 25th November 10am 

This new tutorial – a special Diamond year event – will explore the clues to be found in heraldic pub signs and the nearby local churches, to potentially unlock details of local families and landowners and the value in family and local history.

Our online tutorials provide guidance on a broad range of topics. They are open to everyone and a full list of upcoming talks are available on our website.

In order to be able to join the tutorial you will need access to ZOOM. On the day of the Tutorial you will be sent a unique ID and password.

Please allow for two hours for the session, including joining and discussions. The talk will last approximately an hour.
