We are delighted to announce that Les Mitchinson has been made a Fellow of the Institute. Les was elected Fellow by The Court of Trustees for his conspicuous service to the Institute.
Les is the Director of Education at the Institute and was previuosly Vice Chair of the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives. He is a graduate of the Institute who gained his Higher Certificate in 2008 and the Diploma in Genealogy the following year. Les spent a full career in the Royal Navy before setting up his own Family History education and research business. He became the Director of Education for the Institute in 2017 and was instrumental in introducing our new distance learning courses Awaken Your Ancestors, Broadening Your Family Tree and Completing Your Ancestral Journey, alongside our new Diploma Mentoring course. Working with the team he has helped develop and expand our education and qualification programme.
Unfortunately Les was unable to attend the Awards Day and Diamond Jubilee celebrations n person to accept his award in person but he sent this response:
''When David informed me that I was to be awarded the Fellowship I was both delighted and honoured. I am thankful to the Institute for initially taking me on as a tutor after graduating and then for making me the Director of Education and for trusting me to introduce changes to the course structure so that the IHGS now offers courses to a much wider audience. I wish to thank the Trustees and the IHGS Principal for bestowing this award upon me; particularly in this landmark year. I am just so sorry that the current restrictions prevent me from being able to share the day with you.''
