An aulnager was an official who inspected cloth to check it was manufactured to fixed standards of size and quality. When satisfied, he would then fix his seal upon it. First appointed by Edward I, their role was extended in the 16th century to include knitted goods. Regulations in size were repealed in 1381, but those for quality remained until 1699.
The records of this office are held The National Archives, and contain the names of clothiers and the numbers of cloths they produced.
