Professional Recognition

The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (IHGS) is widely respected as a leading centre for the study of family history, heraldry, and related disciplines. Its qualifications are recognised within the field as a mark of scholarly achievement and professional competence, reflecting rigorous training, examination, and practical application. Whether pursued for personal development or as part of a career in genealogy and heraldry, IHGS awards demonstrate a commitment to the highest academic and ethical standards.

Graduates of the IHGS Higher Certificate and Diploma in Genealogy are granted exemptions for some elements of the Association of Genealogists & Researchers in Archives (AGRA) membership application process and do not need to complete the separate AGRA research assignment..

The Register of Qualified Genealogists (RQG) accept the Diploma in Genealogy as qualification for membership. Students on the Correspondence Course in Genealogy can join RQG as student members.

The University of Strathclyde recognises graduates of IHGS Higher Certificate in Genealogy to it's PgDip/MSc Genealogical, Palaeographic & Heraldic Studies course without pre-qualification.
