As a student or professional genealogist it is important to use referencing when writing assignments or reports.
Referencing is the acknowledgement of the sources that is used in the work. They enable the reader to locate the sources referred to and support and strengthens the argument. A fully sourced genealogical report gives research credibility.
IHGS has produced guidelines to suggested formats for referencing genealogical sources. These are guidelines only as there is no 'right way' to reference sources. However it is important that they include all the necessary information and are standardised throughout the work. For more deatails
