For over 60 years, the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (IHGS) has helped people explore their family history and heraldry. As the UK’s original school of family history, IHGS combines decades of expertise with a passion for connecting learners to their heritage.
Refreshed Online Courses
In 2025, IHGS has revitalised its online courses with a new platform for a more interactive, accessible, and flexible learning experience.
New Bitesize courses let students study at their own pace, focusing on essential resources to trace their family roots. Courses are suitable for beginners and experienced genealogists alike.
IHGS also continues to offer the Higher Certificate in Genealogy, the UK’s premier genealogical qualification, recognised by AGRA and the Register of Qualified Genealogists (RQG), and CPD certified.
Learning with Confidence
Students benefit from expert guidance on everything from finding key records to creating pedigrees and understanding palaeography. IHGS learners gain confidence, overcome research “brick walls,” and enjoy sharing discoveries within a supportive community.
