Many thanks again to all those who took part in our monthly challenge.
The answer to the February challenge is as follows:
1. The arms were those of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, son of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk.
2. Henry Howard caused offence to Henry VIII by quartering the attributed arms of Edward the Confessor (Q5) and by failing to difference the Royal Arms (Q2). The King saw these as a thinly veiled attempt by the Howards to lay claim to the throne.
3. Henry Howard and his father, Thomas, were sentenced to death and attainted for treason, with all of their titles and property forfeited to the crown. Henry was executed, but his father escaped the same fate as the King died on the day of Thomas’s scheduled execution. However, the Duke would spend more than six years imprisoned in the Tower of London, before before being released and pardoned after Queen Mary I acceded to the throne. As one entrant to the competition wrote ‘ I didn’t know that the misuse of arms could be so perilous!’.
