An aulnager or ulnager was an official who inspected cloth to check it was manufactured to fixed standards of size and quality and when satisfied would fix his seal upon it. First appointed by Edward I their role was extended in the 16th century to knitted goods. Regulations in size were repealed in 1381 but those for quality remained until 1699. The rolls are held The National Archives and contain the names of clothiers and the numbers of cloths they produced.
