A recording of a live talk given by Lorna Kinnaird 26th November 2025 available to view.
The Order of the Thistle is Scotland’s highest order of chivalry. It has its origins in the Middle Ages, although the present day order was largely created in 1687 by King James VI of Scotland (King James I of England). The Thistle Chapel was designed by Robert Lorimer and finished in 1911. It contains stalls for the 16 knights, as well as the Sovereign’s stall and two Royal stalls. Thus the chapel contains a fascinating wealth of heraldry celebrating Scotland. The talk includes an introduction to Scottish heraldry.
Lorna is a graduate of the Institute, who gained her Higher Certificate in 2013 and her Postgraduate Diploma in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies with the University of Strathclyde in Sept 2015. She is also a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (FSA Scot) and a member of the Association of Scottish Genealogists and Researchers in Archives (ASGRA).
