How We Used To Eat

Emma Jolly explores how, why and what our 19th and 20th-century ancestors are likely to have eaten.

Popular culture often perpetuates false beliefs as to what our ancestors ate in the past. This presentation will explore British ancestors and their eating habits, encompassing regional differences, institutional menus, and changes over time. Emma will also talk briefly about the influences of the Empire and migration, including British and Anglo-Indian diets in India, and some immigrant diets in Britain (such as Ashkenazi Jewish).

As a family historian, Emma will approach this topic from a socio-cultural perspective rather than that of a cook, focusing on practice with links to class, region, agriculture, and occupation.

Our online tutorials provide guidance on a broad range of topics. They are open to everyone.
