Migration and early modern England

People moved around in early modern England more than we might think. Tracing ancestors through the pre-industrial period does not necessarily mean researching each line back through one place. England in the sixteenth, seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries was a place that people moved to, from and within for reasons as diverse as marriage, work and religious difference. This talk will highlight the different forms of movement that we might expect to find in our family history in this period such as emigration to the Americas, travel for trade and seeking religious refuge.

Joe is freelance historical researcher, an Associate of AGRA and a PhD student at the University of York where he is researching a social history of the English print trade c.1550-1650. He teaches at the university, the Centre for Lifelong Learning and for Pharos Tutors. Joe is also a Trustee of the British Association for Local History.

Our online tutorials provide guidance on a broad range of topics. They are open to everyone.

In order to be able to join the tutorial you will need access to ZOOM. On the day of the Tutorial you will be sent a unique ID and password.

Please allow for two hours for the session, including joining and discussions. The talk will last approximately an hour.
