The Order of the Thistle is Scotland’s highest order of chivalry. It has its origins in the Middle Ages, although the present day order was largely created in 1687 by King James VI of Scotland (King James I of England). The Thistle Chapel was designed by Robert Lorimer and finished in 1911. It contains stalls for the 16 knights, as well as the Sovereign’s stall and two Royal stalls. Thus the chapel contains a fascinating wealth of heraldry celebrating Scotland.
