Tutorial - Scottish Poor Law: where to locate the abundance of the records in Scotland with Lorna Kinnaird

Lorna will look at the Scottish poor relief records and important legislation dating back as far as 1574 and forward to 1929.  She will discuss who was responsible for dealing with the problem of beggars and those in a parish who fell on the parish to support them.  The presentation will discuss those who were responsible for supporting the poor in the parish (heritors, Kirk Session, parochial board and Board of Supervision, then local council – she will outline the important aspects of providing financial support to the poor and what information to a research they can provide.  This important collection can help uncover millions of Scots who otherwise never appear in many records from birth to grave. 

Lorna is a graduate of the Institute, who gained her Higher Certificate in 2013 and her Postgraduate Diploma in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies with the University of Strathclyde in Sept 2015. She is also a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (FSA Scot) and a member of the Association of Scottish Genealogists and Researchers in Archives (ASGRA).

Lorna spent over 30 years researching her own family lines which cover all the British Isles, the US/Canada, China, Russia, Australia and New Zealand. Formerly a Regional Representative of the Guild of One Name Studies for the whole of Scotland, she enjoys a quieter life working on her One Place Study (Aberlady); her Apprenticeship Indentures; Jacobite Records; and the Caledonian Asylum Petition Databases and her being chairman of the Lothians Family History Society as well as running her own Scottish research business from Edinburgh.

In order to be able to join the tutorial you will need access to ZOOM. On the day of the Tutorial you will be sent a unique ID and password.

Please allow for two hours for the session, including joining and discussions. The talk will last approximately an hour.
