We are pleased to announce that that the Bickersteth Medal has been presented to Patric Laurence Dickinson, LVO. The Bickersteth Medal is awarded by the Institute for outstanding services in the fields of heraldry and genealogy.
Patric retired recently after a life's work at the College of Arms. As an alumnus of Exeter College, he was President of the Oxford Union Society and subsequently called to the Bar at the Middle Temple in 1979. He had joined the College in 1968 as a research assistant until his appointment as Rouge Dragon Pursuivant in 1978. He served as Richmond Herald from 1989 to 2010, and was Norroy and Ulster King of Arms before being advanced to Clarenceux King of Arms in 2010. In 2004 he was named Secretary of the Order of the Garter. Already a fellow of the Society of Genealogists he was elected its President in 2005. He became a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order in 2006 and received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. He has also served as Honorary Secretary and Registrar of the British Records Society and Vice-President of the Association of Genealogists and Record Agents. His scholarly contributions to the worlds of heraldry and genealogy are, therefore, considerable.
