Historic Christmas market at the cathedral
The earliest known date for a festive market held in the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral dates from the 14th century, although this fell out of favour in 1813. This year in 2024, for the first time in over 200 years, stalls will be back in the cathedral precincts.
Michaelmas Fairs
In fact, it was the Michaelmas Fair which was the main event, which took place on or around 11th October. This originated as a medieval hiring fair, although by the 19th century would have seen an array of stallholders selling their wares and performers to entertain the crowds. The fair was a significant part of life in Canterbury, and many of our ancestors likely attended or even worked at these historic events.
When Was Michaelmas Celebrated?
Originally the feast of Michaelmas, or St Michael and All Angels - literally 'Michael's mass' - was celebrated on 11th October. However, the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar in September 1752 meant that 11 days were omitted from the calendar - the new date of Michaelmas was therefore 29th September, and this remains the case today in Western churches. However, tradition prevailed with the Michaelmas fairs, with our ancestors generally sticking with the October date.
What happened in Canterbury in 1813?
The Michaelmas Fair in Canterbury took place from 11th October that year, not without some controversy. The following entry from the Kentish Gazette of 12th October 1813 showed that the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury Cathedral had tried to outlaw 'certain usual accompaniments', apparently without success.
What was the outcome of the 1813 disturbances?
From 1814 onwards therefore, the annual Michaelmas Fair was no longer held in the precincts of Canterbury Cathedral, as can be seen from the Kentish Weekly Post of 11th October 1814.

It is very clear that the stalls and entertainments were now to take place at the Cattle Market. And now, 210 years later, this will finally be changed when stallholders return to Canterbury, from 15th November.
