Meaning of Terms in Documents  -Tuition or Curation

If you find the word tuition or curation in a document, such as probate or Chancery records this refers to the guardianship over minors, usually orphans. A 'tutor' was a guardian of  boys under fifteen years old and girls under thirteen. A  'curator' was a guardian up to the age of twenty-one, for boys aged over fourteen and girls twelve.

Join our series of Palaeography Tutorials with Caroline Adams for practical help in reading old documents.
