Tutorial - Endell Street Hospital with Wendy Moore

In May 1915, a team of women doctors and nurses established a major military hospital in the heart of London. Endell Street Hospital was unique in that, apart from a handful of male helpers, all the staff were female. Here, they treated 24,000 wounded soldiers who were shipped back from the frontlines in France, Gallipoli and elsewhere throughout the Great War.

After the hostilities ended, the hospital remained open to treat victims of the 1918 ‘Spanish’ flu pandemic. Endell Street became renowned as the ‘most popular’ hospital in World War One, but that did nothing to help the cause of its women pioneers during peacetime.

Our guest speaker, Wendy Moore, is a freelance journalist and the author of five books on medical and social history.
