Tutorial - Six Hats for Genealogy with Dr Sophie Kay

Decisions, decisions: a tricky step to navigate in our family history. Is the person named in the historical record we’ve just discovered really our ancestor, or simply a namesake poised to confuse and confound us? How can we make our mind up what to do next?

Facts, agreements and conflicts of evidence, creativity and even our own feelings about the research all have a part to play in how we make our decisions. Wouldn’t it be great if we had a helpful scaffolding to step us through these? As it happens, we do: enter the Six Hats method for decision making in family history research!

In this session, we’ll see WHAT the Six Hats method is, WHY we need it, and HOW to apply it. We’ll acquire hands-on experience of each of the Hats through fun, practical exercises on a genealogical case study, and discuss how we can bring all of the Hats together to make a powerful framework for supporting our onward journey through our ancestry.

Practical, fun and accessible, this session is suitable from novices and seasoned genealogists alike. The methods presented can be applied to family history in any location or era.

Our online tutorials provide guidance on a broad range of topics. They are open to everyone.

In order to be able to join the tutorial you will need access to ZOOM. On the day of the Tutorial you will be sent a unique ID and password.

Please allow for two hours for the session, including joining and discussions. The talk will last approximately an hour.
