Tutorial - The English Workhouse from the 18th to the 20th Century with IHGS Student Wendy Tait Mayfield

The English Workhouse from the 18th to the 20th Century by IHGS Student Wendy Tait Mayfield   -  Thursday 21st October at 2pm.  
 
A history of the workhouse system from the 18th to the 20th century, covering the Old Poor Law, Gilbert Unions, New Poor Law and ending with the transfer to the NHS. It will be viewed through the eyes of 12 related men and women who were admitted over a period of 150 years and will cover the reasons for admission, how the system developed, changed and finally came to an end, what records survive and how they can be used to build a vivid picture of an ancestor’s experience, including signposts to other sources.
 
Wendy is a student on the IHGS Correspondence Course and aims to complete the course very soon. She is also the author of Paupers in the Family: Faversham Paper No 126’, published by The Faversham Society.
